Bio-Oils is the owner of the biodiesel plant located in the CEPSA oil refinery of La Rábida, Palos de la Frontera, in the Huelva province. Through pipelines, the new plant is directly connected to both CEPSA’s refinery and its Reina Sofía Wharf; thus, the plant could not be better located from a logistics point of view. The plant began its operations in December 2008. It boasts a production capacity of 250,000 metric tonnes per year and a storage tank capacity of 100,000 cubic metres. Biodiesel is obtained from vegetable oils. Esterification is the chemical process applied to these vegetable oils involving the addition of methanol to obtain biodiesel. The process is performed in low temperature reactors. It is a simple, clean process, respectful of the environment. There are no emissions and no polluting effluents. Rapeseed, palm, soybean and sunflower oils are currently used as raw materials. Other vegetable oils shall be used at a future time, such as oils extracted from jatropha and marine algae.
